Liverpool are interested in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
With the midfield being an ever-present problem for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in recent seasons, the number of midfielders that have seen themselves linked with a move to the Reds has been soaring high and among those names last year was Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.
The 23-year-old versatile midfielder is capable of playing in central midfield, attacking midfield and defensive midfield. However, things from when the Reds last saw themselves linked with a move for Gallagher have changed, and significantly.
Over the summer transfer window, Liverpool have signed the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. The quartet of summer signings complement the existing midfielders at the club including Thiago Alcantara, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic. That makes the need for further midfield reinforcements less urgent than before and makes a case for the Reds going forward without showing interest in Gallagher as well.
Exclusive news from Simon Phillips via his Substack [subscription required] discusses growing interest from English clubs including Liverpool in securing the services of Gallagher, who has captained the Blues a number of times this season in the absence of regular first-choice skipper Reece James.
Gallagher to the Reds?
In 56 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, Gallagher has three goals and as many assists to boot including two assists from 11 appearances this season.
The player first rose to prominence during his loan spell at Crystal Palace, and since then has grown from strength to strength even though he had to face a period of inconsistency last year. While Gallagher’s abilities are certainly noteworthy, Liverpool’s strengthened midfield options may prompt the club to explore alternative strategies, such as focusing on defensive reinforcements.
Liverpool’s pursuit of midfield talent in recent months is a testament to the club’s commitment to addressing its midfield concerns. However, with the recent influx of new midfielders, Liverpool’s attention may shift toward other areas of the squad that require attention, including the defence. Having said all that, the Substack also talks about how Gallagher remains expected to sit down with the Blues over a new contract that extends beyond the current agreement until 2025 (Transfermarkt).
