Juventus aiming tie down Federico Chiesa amid Liverpool interest
Juventus are aiming to tie down Federico Chiesa to a one-year contract extension amid interest from Liverpool ahead of the 2024 January transfer window.
The Italian winger has frequently been linked with a move to the Premier League, with the Reds said to be admirers. According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato(h/t Liverpool Echo) in Italy, Juventus want to secure Chiesa’s future in Turin beyond his current 2025 expiry date (transfermarkt).
The Italian giants will try to swiftly add another year to Chiesa’s deal to avoid a tense final 12 months. The prospect of losing such a player for cheap, let alone free would be unthinkable in Turin.
With his contract running down, Juventus may have to consider selling Chiesa next summer to prevent losing him for free in the long run. Extending by a further season would give them breathing room when it comes to negotiations with the player and interested parties.
However, talks over improved salary terms could provide a potential stumbling block. Liverpool may monitor the situation closely if Chiesa does not commit his peak years to Juventus imminently. Jurgen Klopp is thought to be an admirer of the 26-year-old’s well-rounded attacking talents.
Tottenham and Newcastle are also said to be keeping tabs on Chiesa’s contract situation in Turin. But Juve are eager to protect their asset and enhance his deal rather than lose him on a free or cut-price exit.
Chiesa joined Juventus permanently in 2020 after an initial loan and has contributed 26 goals in 102 games so far. Juve will be desperate to avoid a repeat of losing Paulo Dybala for nothing when his contract expired in June 2022. Tying down Chiesa for longer would avoid a similar outcome and give the Italian giants the luxury of time.
