Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp lauds Jarell Quansah for his performance in the 2-1 win over Bournemouth

Towards the end of the transfer window earlier this summer, a lot of pundits called for Liverpool to get on board a quality centre-back to help ease the pressure on the backline, and potentially take the baton over from Virgil van Dijk in the long run. However, we sometimes do not realise that solutions to certain problems lie within the club’s setup and not every small issue needs the Reds buying players.

20-year-old Jarell Quansah was absolutely brilliant against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup win over the Cherries away from home. A consistent figure in our age-group squads, our league game against Newcastle United earlier this year marked Quansah’s debut for the first team. He featured in the game against the Magpies for the final few minutes, coming on for Joel Matip.

The player, throughout his youth career, has captained the team. He has led the Liverpool age-group squads in UEFA Youth Leagues, Youth FA Cups and the U18 Premier League as well. Having already made a number of appearances for the first team, one would have expected him to start in the League Cup, and as it was, he started, and finished the game absolutely brilliantly.

He went on loan to Bristol Rovers in January and made 16 appearances in League One. That loan spell surely helped him a lot, as is evident from his performances at the top level.

Quansah’s brilliance

Manager Jurgen Klopp was also full of praise for Quansah in his post-game conference as highlighted by Fabrizio Romano via Twitter (Now X). The player showed tremendous composure and was, for most parts of the game, very safe and secure on the ball.

In all of his seven first-team appearances so far, the Warrington-born player has shown tremendous potential. He has just the right people around him, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to help him around, and help him realise his potential. In not more than a year or two, we could surely see him become one of the first names on the team sheet.

Interestingly, in the matchup against the Cherries, he had just more than a century of touches. 114 to be precise, more than double what Joel Matip had. Destined for greatness, he is.

While Quansah currently occupies the fifth-choice centre-back position, it wouldn’t be unexpected to witness an increase in his playing time in the upcoming months. These opportunities might extend beyond his usual appearances in the Europa League and League Cup, as he has demonstrated his ability to step up, potentially making more strides in the Premier League.
