Liverpool held interest in Daichi Kamada before the midfielder’s Eintracht Frankfurt departure

Liverpool were among the clubs showing interest in Daichi Kamada while he was still at Eintracht Frankfurt, according to an agent involved in the player’s eventual transfer.

Kamada ended up leaving Frankfurt as a free agent this past summer, joining Serie A side Lazio on a free transfer. He has since impressed in what has been a largely poor season for the Roman outfit.

But prior to the expiration of his Eintracht contract, Liverpool were admirers of the Japanese playmaker as per an interview by popular FIFA agent and intermediary Gianluca di Carlo to Sport Italia (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The agent who worked on negotiating Kamada’s Lazio switch claims “many clubs had gone for him” even before he became a free agent. Liverpool were said to be one of the sides keen on Kamada while he was still tied to Frankfurt. The Reds saw him as a potential midfield option capable of adding creativity and goal threat.

Kamada scored 16 goals and 7 assists in 47 matches across all competitions last season for Frankfurt, building on previous productive campaigns. Liverpool recognized the 27-year-old’s well-rounded skillset could provide an intriguing addition to their engine room.

With his contract winding down, Liverpool looked to steal a march by expressing interest before his deal expired. However, once Kamada officially became a free agent, the Reds were left disappointed.

The opportunity was lost to sign the midfielder as Lazio won the race and landed him on a free transfer. But Liverpool’s purported interest proves they had identified and tracked Kamada long before his Eintracht departure.

The recruitment team pinpointed him as a talent worth pursuing while he was still tied to the Bundesliga club. Unfortunately, it was not to be and the Nippon ace will now showcase his talents elsewhere.

In the end, Lazio proved the right next step for Kamada after he entered the final year of his Frankfurt contract. But Liverpool’s early admiration showed their acumen for spotting midfield targets, even if this one ultimately fell through.
