Carragher tips Liverpool as City’s biggest threat in Premier League title race
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes this current Reds squad has the quality to push Manchester City closest in the Premier League title race this season.
With Liverpool currently sitting just one point behind league leaders City, Carragher feels Jurgen Klopp’s men have proven they can go toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola’s champions.
Speaking on Sky Sports (h/t Liverpool.com) after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brentford, Carragher stated how Liverpool have been going head-to-head with Manchester City for the Premier League title over the last few years.
“Why shouldn’t Liverpool go there and believe that they can be in this title race?
They are the one team that’s really pushed Manchester City over these last few years. It is a new Liverpool team, but they could still be Manchester City’s biggest challengers because they’ve got players and a manager who has been there before.”
Carragher argues that despite changes to the squad, Liverpool remain City’s biggest challenger thanks to elite players and an experienced manager who know what it takes to win titles.
The Reds legend tipped the upcoming clash between the two giants on November 25th as a pivotal opportunity for Liverpool to show why they are serious contenders again.
With City also juggling the Club World Cup in December, Carragher feels Liverpool could have an edge if they stay within touching distance over the busy festive period.
After keeping pace with a comfortable win over Brentford, Liverpool’s credentials face a massive test after the international break. Taking points off City would send a statement.
Klopp has constructed a new-look squad while retaining the experienced backbone
Jurgen Klopp has molded a new-look squad after losing Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, and James Milner among others, and adding Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and others. But the backbone of Alisson Becker, Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah remain from recent title-winning campaigns.
Carragher contends this elite spine, plus the manager’s winning experience, ensures Liverpool cannot be discounted as serious contenders again.
The key will be navigating this upcoming grueling run of fixtures and staying within arm’s reach of City entering 2024. The head-to-head clash on November 25th now looms as a potential season-defining 90 minutes.
Carragher understands nothing is guaranteed in the Premier League. But he believes Liverpool have the experience, manager, and talent – both emerging and established – to take it to elite City again this campaign.
