Netherlands U21 boss praises ‘Very Good’ Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch after international call-up saga
Netherlands Under-21 manager Michael Reiziger has stated there are no lingering issues with Liverpool FC’s Ryan Gravenberch after the midfielder declined a call-up earlier this season.
Gravenberch opted against joining up with the Dutch U21 squad in September shortly after his transfer from Bayern Munich to Liverpool. The Dutchman wanted time to settle down at the Merseyside.
This decision led to a temporary exile from international duty. It would appear that the worst is behind the 21-year-old and he is now back in contention to don the Orange colours.
However, speaking this week to Voetbal International (h/t Liverpool Echo), Reiziger made clear Gravenberch’s refusal is now “behind us” and even praised the 21-year-old’s strong form at the club level.
“This is no longer a punishment or anything. Not at all. That is already behind us.
During the next international match, in March, you will of course look further. Then you don’t even know whether he is still eligible for the Dutch Juniors or the Dutch national team. Because he plays very good games at Liverpool. That’s just a very good thing.
But again we now have three periods in quick succession and this group has done well. That’s really the reason not to take Ryan along now. As KNVB we are in contact with him, that was also explained to him, Nigel de Jong did that. He responded well to that.”
While not selected for the latest U21 squad, Reiziger hinted Gravenberch could potentially earn a senior Netherlands call-up in March if he maintains his Liverpool performances. The midfielder was criticized by manager Ronald Koeman back in September for turning down the U21s. But Reiziger has struck a conciliatory tone.
Gravenberch has shone since joining Liverpool, easing concerns about losing veteran midfielders this summer. Veteran midfielders Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, and Naby Keïta all have left Anfield this summer.
Ryan Gravenberch’s consistent deliveries of good performances are helping the Reds immensely. The 21-year-old has the ability to be a top-tier performer for the national team for years to come. With Gravenberch reigniting his career in Red, there is little reason for the Orange to banish him.

Reiziger’s comments indicate Gravenberch is out of the Dutch international doghouse. His main focus now is keeping up his club form to bring a senior call-up closer to reality. For all Liverpool fans, having a happy Gravenberch is also pivotal as he looks to justify his £34.2m price tag. Getting the Netherlands issue resolved benefits all parties.
