Luton’s Andros Townsend hails ‘immense quality’ of Liverpool’s midfield engine Alexis Mac Allister

Luton Town midfielder Andros Townsend has heaped praise on Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister, highlighting the Argentine’s “immense quality” after facing him earlier this month.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club podcast(h/t Liverpool Echo), former Premier League winger Townsend singled out Mac Allister’s ability following Luton’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

“Whereas now, when the ball’s at the feet of a Gomez, Van Dijk or Konate, you’ve got three midfielders who all have the quality to get on the ball, get turned, playforward.

You talk about Mac Allister as the No.6 now; he’s got immense quality. It’s so tough, you can’t really allow anyone to have the ball.”

The Luton man’s admiration for Mac Allister underlines how quickly the Argentine has become a vital cog for Liverpool since arriving from Brighton in the summer. Stationed at the base of Liverpool’s midfield, the tenacious ball-winner provides energy and security that brings balance to the Reds.

But as Townsend notes, Mac Allister is far more than just a pure destroyer. The Argentine dictates play with his range of passing and drives Liverpool forward with forceful runs. Townsend’s praise shows how opponents are quickly realizing Mac Allister’s all-around game makes him one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet.

Signed for £35 million as a replacement for the outgoing veteran midfielders, the 24-year-old World Cup winner has kept Liverpool ticking during an early season midfield crisis. His seamless adaptation is surpassing expectations.

His combination of steel, skill, and stamina makes Mac Allister the complete modern midfield package. Townsend found that out firsthand during the Luton clash. With injury issues clearing up, Liverpool’s midfield options will soon expand again. But Mac Allister has likely cemented himself as the midfield keystone Jurgen Klopp can build around.

The Argentine’s rise has softened the blow of losing veterans like James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Naby Keita . Alongside Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and others, Mac Allister is the future at Anfield.

If Mac Allister maintains this level, Liverpool may have uncovered one of the Premier League’s next elite midfielders. Townsend won’t be the last opponent left impressed by the Argentine’s immense quality.
