Liverpool’s midfield revamp over the summer brought in new faces like Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch. However, recent reports suggest that the Reds are not done with their midfield makeover and are still eyeing a move for OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.
The French midfielder was on Liverpool’s radar during the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialize, and Thuram continued his stint in Ligue 1. Despite the influx of new talent in the middle of the park, Liverpool seem keen on adding Thuram to their midfield mix.
According to Fichajes via ECHO, Liverpool’s interest in Thuram remains strong, with the potential deal estimated to be around £40m. This indicates that Jurgen Klopp sees something special in the 21-year-old midfielder and believes he could add value to the squad.
Thuram, the son of World Cup-winning French defender Lilian Thuram, possesses a well-rounded skill set that includes passing, ball control, and defensive capabilities. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively could provide Klopp with more tactical options in midfield.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Thuram despite their recent midfield additions suggests a strategic approach to squad building. Klopp seems intent on creating a midfield unit with depth, versatility, and competition for places, ensuring the team can navigate the challenges of a long and demanding season.
While the strategies seem good, it is important to note that we have enough “versatile” options when it comes to our midfield, and what we could best work with now is the services of an out-and-out defensive midfielder like Fabinho instead of a Jack of All Trades like Thuram. We need a defensive midfielder and a master at that.
Thuram’s addition, if it materialises, could provide Klopp with more tactical flexibility, allowing him to adapt his midfield setup based on the opposition and the demands of different competitions.
However, the lack of a defensive midfielder which we are experiencing now, will surely continue to haunt us. While Thuram is a very good talent, the club would rather benefit from a pure DM over anything else.
