Alexis Mac Allister says scoring vs Fulham was a bonus given his defensive role at Anfield
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister insists he does not feel pressure to be a prolific scorer, seeing his role as more focused on facilitating others after his sensational goal in the 4-3 win over Fulham.
Mac Allister emphatically opened his Liverpool account with a looping 25-yard volley to briefly restore the Reds’ lead on Sunday in an end-to-end thriller.
The strike was an early contender for the club’s Goal of the Season prizes. But Mac Allister sees adding goals as merely an occasional perk rather than his priority as in an interview covered by Liverpool Echo.
“I’m not worried about goals, I work but it’s nice to score. When I play as a six, I’m not worried about goals.”
Mac Allister takes more satisfaction from performing his defensive duties and distributing creatively from deep areas. Letting Liverpool’s forwards grab the headlines suits the deep-playing Argentine fine.
He admitted that his Anfield beauty against Fulham is the best goal in his career so far. But contributing decisively at both ends matters most for him.
“It was the best goal I’ve scored in my life.
We can play better than that, defend better than that and we didn’t enjoy that part of the game.”
We want to fight and win every game, that’s what we are going to try to do.”
While the stunner added gloss, Mac Allister gained more joy from the victory itself as Liverpool came from behind late on. He feels strengthening the collective foundations is vital. He also showed leadership skills by demanding higher standards.
Table-topping consistency aided by midfielders like Mac Allister excelling in less glamorous areas will determine Liverpool’s title ambitions more than spectacular goals.
