Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes to miss trip to Liverpool

Following his fifth yellow card this season, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will miss the trip to Liverpool on the 17th of December. The Portuguese midfielder picked up a fifth booking in the competition this season during the closing stages of United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The league is not new to Fernandes’ dissent and the case was no different against Bournemouth as the frustrations of losing the game were pretty evident on the midfielder’s face. His dissent has been a recurring theme throughout his time at our rivals, and this latest booking adds to a list of disciplinary issues for the captain.

Despite his significance to the team’s performance, Fernandes’ attitude has long been a subject of criticism. Even in his last visit to Anfield in March, during a 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, his demeanour on the field drew attention. This accumulation of yellow cards reflects a lack of discipline that extends beyond this particular incident.

Manchester United confirmed Bruno’s absence via a club statement on their official website. From a Liverpool perspective, Fernandes’ absence could be viewed with a mix of relief and a sense of opportunity.

No Bruno, No Party?

While acknowledging his statistical impact as United’s second-highest goalscorer and leading in assists this season, Liverpool supporters may take a playful dig at Fernandes for his recurrent disciplinary issues.

Ironically, even on his last visit to Anfield, the player showed dissent on several occasions but the rules last time around were not too strict and hence, he finished the game without a yellow card but saw his team ship seven goals to their arch-rivals.

Fernandes’ absence might be depicted as a moment for Liverpool players to catch their breath without the risk of being on the receiving end of his expressive protests. Memes and social media banter might take the opportunity to showcase Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, as the epitome of on-field decorum in contrast to the suspended maestro.
