Moises Caicedo says Liverpool moved ‘too late’ for him to turn down Chelsea switch

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has shed light on the circumstances that led to his move to Stamford Bridge, revealing that Liverpool’s interest came too late for him to reconsider.

Caicedo’s transfer marked the end of Liverpool’s pursuit of a new No. 6 following Fabinho’s departure in the summer. Despite their efforts, the Reds ultimately secured the services of Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo for a significantly lower fee than what Chelsea paid for Caicedo.

In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Sheffield United, Caicedo explained that he had been in talks with Chelsea for an extended period, making it nearly impossible for him to reject their offer. He cited the extensive negotiations and support he received from Chelsea as key factors in his decision.

Liverpool signed Wataru Endo instead of Moises Caicedo.

Here is what Caicedo told Sky Sports on his failed move to Liverpool:

“I was talking with Chelsea for a long time. It was impossible to say not to Chelsea, because they were with me supporting me,”

“In the summer I suffered a lot because it was complicated to leave Brighton. They were with me, and in the last moment Liverpool called me but it was [too] late because I wanted to play for Chelsea. It was tough to say no to Chelsea.”

He shared the complexity of leaving Brighton in the summer and mentioned that Liverpool contacted him in the final moments, but by then, his heart remained set on playing for Chelsea.

The staggering £115m transfer fee for Caicedo set a new British record, surpassing Chelsea’s earlier record fee paid for Enzo Fernandez. However, Caicedo has faced challenges adapting to life in West London, and the hefty price tag has added to the scrutiny surrounding his performances.

For Liverpool, the pursuit of Caicedo might not have materialised, but the acquisition of Endo has provided Jurgen Klopp with a decent midfield option. As the season progresses, both players will be under scrutiny, with Caicedo aiming to justify his record-breaking fee at Chelsea, and Endo seeking to establish himself further in the Liverpool squad.

Jurgen Klopp recently joked about how Caicedo is struggling to settle into new colours, trying to say Liverpool dodged a bullet. As funny as that may be, the truth is Endo has also not been great for the Reds, and it would make sense if we further reinforce our midfield in the upcoming transfer windows.
