Jamie Carragher namedrops three world-class players on the Liverpool roster
Liverpool boast an impressive 37 points against their name with 11 wins in the 16 matches the club has played thus far in the season in the league. Former English footballer Jamie Carragher believes that the Anfield Giants can bring the title home if Jurgen Klopp secures a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window.
However, Klopp’s team seems keener on strengthening their central defence. Joel Matip’s knee injury seems to have prompted the club to look at defensive opportunities in the market.
Carragher took to his column in The Telegraph to provide his commentary on the subject by writing:
“Liverpool are top of the league and I am not really sure how. The league table says one thing but my eyes tell me something else. The balance of the team is still not quite right, and it is hard to imagine it will be without a ready-made defensive midfielder.”
Jurgen Klopp completely revamped the midfield ahead of this season. He brought in remarkable players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo and expelled the former ones namely Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita. Carragher took to his column to name-drop three of the Reds’ midfielders only to convey that they weren’t entirely reliable:
“The much talked about new midfield is not fully functioning yet, the trio of Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch impressing in moments rather than in back-to-back fixtures.”
Contrary to the Liverpool legend’s urging to bring in reinforcements for the midfield, Klopp has dampened the transfer rumours by explaining the slim chances his team had for scouting desirable players and complexities involved in transfers. In a report from The Mirror, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was quoted saying:
“You always talk about transfers like it is the easiest thing in the world. They all cost money, it must be the right player. We still have four centre-backs. Tell me a club which wants to sell a top, top centre-half. Tell me one.”
He continued to say:
“Is it now perfect? As long as we can go with those four [centre-backs]. If not, then it will be a bit more tricky with the amount of games coming up. It was never wonderland when you bring a world-class centre-back until the other one is fit again. As long as other clubs don’t put them under the Christmas tree for us and say, ‘Take it and use it for as long as you need it’… I didn’t really think about it yet because it was only five days since we had that problem. I don’t think so, to be honest.”
Klopp seems to believe he is sorted with the four centre-backs he has despite Matip’s injury It must be remembered though that Joe Gomez has played majorly as a right-back and sometimes as a left-back this season.
