Liverpool FC retain impressive spot in latest UEFA club rankings despite missing out on Champions League football

Liverpool retain impressive fifth spot in the latest UEFA club rankings

This is the first time that Liverpool have failed to qualify for the Champions League since the 2015-16 season. Whilst that is a disappointment, we have fought back well this season.

Liverpool have grown accustomed to success under Jurgen Klopp for quite some time now. Last season was an anomaly to the club’s usual self. This season though, we find ourselves back at the top of the table.

Reds forward Mohamed Salah was the most vocal amongst his teammates on the regret of not making it into the venerable league. The Egyptian footballer took to X to apologize on behalf of his team and write about his displeasure. His tweet read:

“I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”

This setback seems to have not hindered Jurgen Klopp from vying to extract the maximum possible potential from his team. With a resounding start to the 2023-24 season, Liverpool have made it to the top of the Premier League table, having earned 37 points thus far.

Before the beginning of the current season, the calibre of the revamped Reds was still quite uncertain. They put all doubts to rest by winning 11 of the 16 games they’ve played thus far in the season.

Their dominating presence in the Premier League has earned them the fourth rank in the UEFA club rankings. They’re 132 points behind the top spot where Man City, who are three places behind the Reds in the Premier League currently.

Jurgen Klopp has turned the situation around at Liverpool

Klopp has stopped at nothing to ensure his team live up to his reputation. The German coach went to extreme lengths such as rebuilding the team’s entire midfield, bringing in world-class players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and letting the old names go.

In a report by CNBC TV18, the Liverpool boss spoke on his team’s progress this season by saying

“I am just happy with the development up until this point. We had to replace some of the strongest characters in world football. Our new leadership group are all experienced, world class footballers, so that’s helpful.”

Owing to their drastic progress this season, the Merseyside outfit can entertain high hopes for fighting it out in the best European competition in the 2024-25 season.

While the loss to Union SG would not have had the greatest of significance, the game against Manchester United surely does. If they manage to play their way into finishing top four in the 2023-24 season’s Premier League, they will automatically qualify for the Champions League.
