Liverpool seize upper hand in race for Joao Palhinha as Bayern refuse to engage in bidding war
Fulham’s midfielder Joao Palhinha has managed to capture the attention of European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Liverpool. The 28-year-old has shown enough promise in his style of play for the Reds to allegedly showcase interest in bidding on him.
As quoted by CaughtOffside (h/t Liverpool ECHO), Christian Falk of the German outlet Bild informed that the Reds hope to sign the Portuguese footballer in 2024.
Falk had taken to X in late November of this year to post about how the Fulham midfielder wanted to migrate to Bayern Munich. The German club were set to sign Palhinha in the summer transfer window, however, the deal broke down on deadline day.
However, the Red’s alleged interest in the 28-year-old have left things uncertain in this case. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had allegedly reached out to the player’s agent in hopes of acquiring him in the next transfer window or at the end of the season.
Bayern seemed keen on reinforcing their defensive side owing to the large number of injuries the club’s players have suffered in that domain. If Klopp’s men get to Palhinha first, the German club may divert their attention to Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad according to Falk (CaughtOffside). Despite being one of the world’s most financially secure clubs, the Bundesliga heavyweights do smart business. Pertaining the same, Falk told CaughtOffside,
“They don’t have the money at the moment to commit to many big transfers and signing a centre-back is the priority. So, perhaps they might move away from the idea of signing him in the winter if Liverpool are also involved in the poker.”

Klopp rebuilt the Merseyside outfit’s entire defensive midfield mid-season by roping in world-class players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo and expelled the former ones namely Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita.
The German head coach has propelled the Reds to stand at the top of the Premier League table with 37 points to their name. Klopp still requires a strong defensive midfielder to take on the no.6 role for his team. Palhinha, best known for his robust style of play and expertise in playing long balls, would serve as an able defender to the recently initiated roster of defensive midfielders.
