Paul Robinson outlines the problems with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and his role in the squad

The Reds’ pursuit of the perfect starting XI certainly continues to be a topic of discussion among fans and pundits alike. The recent scrutiny comes from former Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who voiced his reservations about Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister occupying the crucial number six role.

Robinson delved into the intricacies of Liverpool’s midfield dynamics, pinpointing Mac Allister’s perceived shortcomings. The Reds have had four brilliant players coming in over the summer window, but unfortunately, none of them fit the profile of a defensive midfielder that suits Liverpool best. We signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart and he is a great player to have on board. However, the Japanese captain has had it tough to adjust to the Premier League.

Coming back to Macca, the Argentine international tends to be susceptible to opponents running past him in the midfield, attributing a significant portion of the goals conceded to players exploiting this vulnerability. Moreover, constantly engaging against his natural style of play has put Macca on the sidelines nurturing what seems like a serious knee injury.

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister is currently nursing a knee injury he picked up against Sheffield United.

Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, here is what Paul Robinson about Mac Allister make shifting as a defensive midfielder for Jurgen Klopp:

“I think Mac Allister gets run off too easily as well, when he’s played. The goals they have conceded with people running off his shoulder, he’s targeted,”

#10 playing as a DM for the Reds

We all know that Macca, by trade, is not a defensive midfielder. The criticism directed towards him in this context might be unjust, considering his natural inclinations and strengths lie in different areas of the pitch.

The debate certainly raises the pertinent question of whether Liverpool need to secure a natural number six to shore up their defensive midfield, allowing players like Mac Allister to flourish in positions where their skills remain better suited. There’s absolutely no doubt that the former Brighton man would put his best foot forward playing in a position where he’s a natural. A #10 that is.

Liverpool is probably the only club in the world to play their #10 in defensive midfield.

His contributions in advanced roles on the field should not go overlooked. The Argentine’s flair and surely creativity make him a valuable asset in more advanced positions, where his attacking instincts can stand harnessed to greater effect.

Liverpool’s success in finding the right balance will hinge on successfully identifying the club’s requirements over the upcoming transfer window. A defensive midfielder is an absolute must, and if possible, the Reds should also try to sign a centre-back to negate the loss of Joel Matip, who stands ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL rupture.
