Manchester United icon blasts Liverpool ace for ‘arrogance’ following Anfield stalemate

Roy Keane accuses Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk of being arrogant after Man United draw

Following the disappointing draw against Manchester United, Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk took to comment on the intent of both teams in the game and accused the visitors of playing for a draw rather than for a win.

Liverpool created a decent amount of chances and took several shots on goal as well. However, all of that counted for zilch. All in all, it was a frustrating result, to say the least. We cannot pinpoint who was the best or the worst player on the pitch. Lacklustre in front of goal and that’s that.

Skipper Virgil spoke to the media after the game, obviously frustrated with the result of the game and talked about United’s pragmatic approach in the game as they slowed things down to prevent Liverpool from gaining an advantage over the game over the course of 90 minutes.

Keane on your words, Roy?

We surely cannot say United were wrong in doing what they did. But it surely sucked the juices out of Liverpool fans. Here is what Virgil had to say via the Mirror:

“There was only one team trying to win the game. We want to win every game of course and that is why it is frustrating. Sometimes we shot too easy and could have passed on the overlap. The right decision was sometimes lacking.”

These comments did not go well with former Manchester United captain and now pundit Roy Keane who aimed a dig at Liverpool’s 30-year-old wait for a league trophy. Someone had to bite back at Virgil and Keane, being the one who takes action more often than not, took it upon him to tell Liverpool’s captain off. Here is what he responded with via Mirror

“We heard Van Dijk speaking, obviously some arrogance coming out of him dissing United like that,”

“He needs to be reminded himself, he’s playing for a team that’s only won one title in 30-odd years. He said only one team wanted to win, Man United are buzzing with the point. Man United are in a difficult place, like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many a year. So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today.”

Grats Keano, you put Virgil back in his place. But what is the relevance of those many years to what transpired between the two sides on Sunday evening? In any case, Van Dijk clarified he’d rather focus on what his team needs to do than speak about the opposition.

Virgil only spoke the truth. That is actually what happened throughout the game. But let’s get to the bigger things. As Liverpool fans, our attention should shift back to the upcoming fixtures and the team’s pursuit of success in the present rather than getting entangled in a war of words.

As the war of words subsides, Liverpool face the challenge of channeling the frustration into positive energy on the pitch. The focus now shifts to on-field performances, with the captain and the team aiming to translate their intent into tangible results, leaving the verbal exchanges behind and concentrating on the pursuit of Premier League glory.
