Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler claims he was better than Michael Owen

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has stirred up the debate on striking prowess by claiming that he was superior to Michael Owen in “every aspect of being a striker.” The two iconic goal-scorers enjoyed a shared history at Anfield, but Fowler’s recent comments have ignited discussions about their respective contributions to Liverpool and their post-Anfield careers.

Fowler, a key figure at Anfield during Owen’s rise to prominence, asserted his belief in his superiority over Owen during their time together. Despite Owen’s Ballon d’Or win in 2001 and success with the England national team, Fowler emphasised that he excelled in various facets of striker play.

The comparison between Fowler and Owen extends beyond their on-field performances. After a successful stint with Liverpool, Fowler left for Leeds in 2001 but returned for a second spell with the Reds. This comeback showcased Fowler’s enduring connection with the club and its supporters.

God or Owen?

In contrast, Michael Owen’s departure from Liverpool remained met with a different response. Despite his accomplishments, Owen’s decision to join Manchester United strained his relationship with the Anfield faithful. Fowler’s comments indirectly highlight the contrast in the two players’ post-Liverpool trajectories. Here is what God had to say, speaking on on William Hill‘s podcast, Up Front with Simon Jordan on being better than Owen:

“In all honesty, I’ve always thought I was better than Michael Owen. He was quicker than me, but in every other element of being a striker, I genuinely think I was better than him.”

Owen’s 156 goals compared to Robbie’s 183 fall short by plenty. Liverpool’s “love” for Owen also falls short plenty when put up against how much the Anfield faithful adore Fowler.

The banter isn’t just about who was the better striker; it’s a celebration of the unique qualities each brought to the pitch in the hallowed red jersey. As fans, we’ll always have our biases and what also counts is who among these two did not turn up for our traditional rivals.

Whether you side with God or the Baby-Faced Assassin, the beauty of being a Liverpool fan lies in these spirited debates that bring our shared history to life.

In the end, it’s a subjective debate. Who was the better striker? The answer depends on your perspective and the generation you were a part of. If you say Owen, ask your older brothers which player was better.
