Trent Alexander-Arnold compares current Liverpool standings to last season; highlights key difference

Trent Alexander-Arnold compares Liverpool’s performance from last season to the current one ahead of clash against Arsenal

Liverpool’s highly anticipated match against the Gunners is set to take place today at Anfield in Merseyside. The Reds held a brief post at the top of the Premier League table. They were knocked down to the third rank, a point behind Aston Villa and the leading Arsenal.

Post their brief setback in the match against Man Utd, the players of the Anfield side bounced back with their 5-1 win over West Ham on Thursday. The race to come out as number one during Christmas makes the match one with heightened excitement to see if the Gunners or Reds would secure the spot. However, a draw between the two clubs could result in Aston Villa sitting pretty on top.

As quoted by Liverpool ECHO

, the Reds’ reliable right-back Trent Alexander compared the stats from last season to the current one by saying:

“Arsenal and City kind of ran away this time last season. No-one else could keep up the pace. Our sights going into this season were to be in and around. So far we have done that. This weekend is a big one.”

Arsenal finished first in the Premier League rankings during Christmas last year and it seems likely that they might secure the first place this year too. The significant improvement for Jurgen Klopp’s men from last year is that while the Reds were 16 points from the lead club in 2022, they are now only a single point behind the leading Gunners. All five teams in the top are in formidable form only six points as the difference this season, a phenomenon that adds to the suspense to determine who’d finish first.

Alexander-Arnold also elaborated on how their German coach’s system has enabled them to sustain in the league by saying:

“We have built on it and worked very hard as a team in pre-season and then we have continued to grow and grow. We have had a lot of changes but the system is working and you can see that even when I have not been in the team. When I was injured briefly in September we still continued to do it with Joe (Gomez), and Conor Bradley does it really well as we saw in pre-season before he got his injury. It works overall. It is more about a system rather than who plays in there.”

Mikel Arteta’s men have somewhat matured this season and improved significantly in their counter. If they perform with the same level of control they managed against Brighton last week, they would have a good chance of winning against Klopp’s men.

The Reds might have a chance at owning the game if the forwards focus on creating chances and following through with them. Klopp’s men must be desperate to shine again after their dull 0-0 draw against Man Utd last Sunday and the clash against Arsenal provides the perfect opportunity.

The forwards lacked proper synchronization in the clash against Man Utd. They missed out on critical passes and squandered several chances to seal a goal. However, seeing Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo scoring in the match against West Ham a couple of days ago has incited hope that they’ll return to their intimidating form. The match today would undoubtedly be an eventful one.
