Jamie Carragher believes Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai can fill the role left by Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah
Jamie Carragher backs Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai to fill the role left by Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah. The Sky Sports pundit believes that the duo can succeed while Salah fulfils his AFCON duties with Egypt.
Salah is currently the leading goal-scorer for the Reds and he has equal assists alongside Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold. His absence leaves a hole in not just productivity but also tactically with what he brings from the right flank.
Liverpool have deployed currently injured Ben Doak and Harvey Elliott on the right flank as rotational options for Salah. Elliott has been in spectacular form this season despite not being a first-team regular as he continues to develop.
Meanwhile, Szoboszlai has played regularly as the right central midfielder, having played as a right winger for his former club. The Hungary captain suffered a hamstring injury against Newcastle United, his estimated return is currently unknown.
Carragher told Sky Sports that Liverpool have the solutions to fill the gap on the right side. He said:
“It will be very interesting to see who he puts in that position. An option could be Harvey Elliott. I think he is more of a midfield player, he lacks pace to play in the front three but he could do it. But also Szoboszlai. Liverpool have got a lot of midfield options now with Alexis Mac Allister back, Szoboszlai has played in that position for his former club.”
As thing stands, Elliott would fill the gap on the right flank in the current set-up under manager Jurgen Klopp. He has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing with a goal and two assists.
The 20-year-old has produced some fantastic performances whenever he received the game time for his team. He brings creativity, hard-work and tactical maturity even if he cannot emulate the productivity that Salah brings to the table.
The England U21 has a fantastic opportunity to impress Klopp while Salah fulfils his AFCON competition duties. Liverpool needs to rely on Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz to produce the goals and assists.
