Liverpool are targeting Genoa defensive midfielder Morten Frendrup to bolster their squad with his versatility
Liverpool are targeting Genoa defensive midfielder Morten Frendrup for the 2024 transfer windows to bolster their squad. The Reds revamped their midfield during the summer transfer window, playing a key role in their current season’s success.
Nevertheless, Liverpool lost James Milner as the versatile veteran left the club to join Brighton & Hove Albion. Milner could fulfil multiple roles for manager Jurgen Klopp, assisting the manager during any injury crisis.
The Reds are currently facing an injury crisis in their defence with the season-ending injury to Joel Matip. Furthermore, versatile defender Joe Gomez is currently playing as the left-back in the absence of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
Tsimikas sustained a collarbone fracture against Arsenal in December while Robertson would return from his injury in January. Gomez has done a fantastic job as the left-back while already playing a squad role as a right-back and centre-back.
Liverpool Echo reported that the Reds are monitoring Frendrup as a potential signing to bolster their squad. The defensive midfield has the versatility to fulfil the roles of both the right-back and the left-back.
The 22-year-old has been a pivotal player for Genoa, having played as a central, defensive, left and right midfielder. He has made 20 appearances in all competitions, contributing with five assists so far this season.
Frendrup has showcased his playmaking skills, stacking up assists while dictating the tempo and distributing passes from a deeper position. He enjoys a high-pressing style of play with his aggression, tackling, blocking and ball interception abilities.
January has often proven to be a fruitful month for recruitment at #LFC under Jurgen Klopp. Van Dijk, Diaz and Gakpo all signed after the turn of the year. A look at what might be to come with the winter window open once more. https://t.co/qK41QZ1EPB

The Dane has plenty of stamina and energy to cover distances and the work ethic to help his teammates. His defensive contribution and offensive abilities make him a very good team player and a tactical asset for his manager.

Frendrup fits the profile that suits the high-pressing and counter-pressing style which Klopp deploys and his versatility is an asset. The 22-year-old could be the replacement for Milner that Klopp likes to have in his squad. It is unlikely that Liverpool would move for Frendrup during January but a summer move could be on the cards.
