Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino discusses the potential signing of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson
It was only a few months ago that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson opted to follow Steven Gerrard and joined the Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq. Since then, the Reds have gone from strength to strength, naming Virgil van Dijk as Hendo’s successor and are currently leading the Premier League charts.
Contrasting fortunes for the ex-Liverpool men in the Middle East as Ettifaq are eighth in the Saudi Pro League and both, Stevie and Hendo are not enjoying their time in Dammam. Rumour from Ben Jacobs via Twitter has it that Hendo wants a move back to the Premier League. There are not a lot of clubs that would sign the 33-year-old on loan considering his high wage demands. However, we cannot rule anything out in football, and there might be a slim chance that he actually might come back to the English top tier.
Very recently, after their FA Cup win against Preston North End, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino spoke about the possibility of getting players on board and was quizzed about the former Liverpool man as well. The Blues have a very young side and could enjoy the benefit of an experienced campaigner in the middle of the park. However, whether or not that player is Hendo is only something time will tell.
Here is what Poch had to say on the prospect of signing Hendo via the Mirror:
“We didn’t talk about names. At the moment, we are not talking about players.”
“I saw Behdad [Eghbali], with Paul [Winstanley] and Laurence [Stewart]. I think we are going to have a chat tomorrow. We didn’t talk about names or players. For now, we are focusing on players like Andrey Santos.”
As earlier mentioned, Chelsea’s current squad boasts a youthful core, and the addition of an experienced campaigner like Jordan Henderson could provide valuable leadership and maturity in the midfield. However, Pochettino remained tight-lipped on the subject, emphasizing the need to focus on current squad members.
Hendo to Chelsea?
The mention of Andrey Santos, who returned to Chelsea after his loan spell at Nottingham Forest also means the Blues bring focus to what they have at their disposal at the moment. The coming days may shed more light on Chelsea’s transfer plans, but for now, the possibility of Jordan Henderson returning to the Premier League remains shrouded in uncertainty.
As the transfer window unfolds, football enthusiasts will be eagerly monitoring any developments regarding Jordan Henderson’s potential return to the Premier League. The intrigue lies not only in the possibility of Henderson securing a move back to English football but also in how his inclusion might shape Chelsea’s trajectory.
However, as we saw with him last season, Hendo has not been the same player he was a few years ago, and a move to a lower-level Premier League side might do him better than a move to the Blues.
