Liverpool star Mohamed Salah attracts interest from Saudi Pro League, but club resists

Former Liverpool goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, has recently discussed the possibility of Mohamed Salah, the Reds’ standout left winger, leaving Anfield. As Salah heads to the Ivory Coast to captain Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool face the next month or so without their star player.

Salah, who currently shares the top scorer title of the 2023/24 Premier League season with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, has caught the attention of the Saudi Pro League. His exceptional performance has prompted substantial offers from the league to acquire him from Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, is understandably reluctant to release his top scorer. According to Liverpool ECHO, Liverpool have already rejected Al Ittihad’s bid of over £100 million for Salah. Despite his contract running only until 2025 (Transfermarkt), the Saudi league might attempt another bid in the upcoming summer transfer window.

As quoted by the Liverpool ECHO (h/t Inside Track Podcast), the English legend shared his thoughts on the left-winger’s transfer to the Saudi Pro League by saying:

“For me, it’s a done deal. For his personal ambitions, his personal wealth and for his hereditary wealth to leave for his family. Not just that, but because of his religious beliefs. Playing in that league, he will be an icon. Cristiano Ronaldo was taken over there at the start of it all, but he can’t play forever. Mohamed Salah, in that league, tops Ronaldo. The interest that it spikes and the revenue that he brings to that league. That will be the biggest deal that the Premier League has ever seen, I have no doubt.”

Mohamed Salah might just be the biggest Saudi transfer yet

The potential move of Mohamed Salah to Saudi Arabia holds significant implications, arguably surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer from Manchester United to Saudi Arabia. Salah’s strong connection to the Arab world, due to his religious roots, positions him as a potential icon and a valuable asset for elevating the league’s profile.

The question remains whether Liverpool will capitalize on the lucrative offers from the Saudi league in the next transfer window, or whether they will present Salah with an improved deal to secure his long-term commitment. Salah’s synergy with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota has been instrumental in forming a powerful front line, propelling Liverpool to the top of the Premier League with an impressive 45 points.

It’ll be a huge surprise if Salah doesn’t end up in the Saudi league at some point during his career. He does not show any signs of slowing down yet though and could do a very good job for Liverpool if we extend his deal. It remains to be seen how the club views the same situation and what they decide with him.
