Courtesy of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, Liverpool received a transfer boost to pursue Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe’s reluctance to commit his future to Real Madrid has the Spanish Giants thinking about the alternatives.
Mbappe has come close to signing for Real twice in past transfer windows but opted to stay with PSG. Football enthusiasts consider the 25-year-old as one of the best players globally, elevating his status to that of a marquee signing.
However, the Frenchman’s astronomical salary package at PSG has already put many clubs out of the race. His contract expiring at the end of this season allows him to negotiate pre-contract agreements with other clubs.
Mirror reports that Liverpool are still in contention to sign Mbappe despite his unrealistic salary package and Real’s interest. The 25-year-old has waived a £69m loyalty bonus he earned for staying beyond last summer’s transfer window.
Madrid are the only club apart from PSG that can sustain his salary while allowing Mbappe to win trophies. However, the Spanish giant’s left flank is already occupied by Vinicius Junior, a star in his rights and well-established.
Furthermore, Madrid desires a forward to replace Karim Benzema, their icon who departed during the summer. Haaland fits the profile that they desire and he is at par with Mbappe in reputation and stardom.
The 23-year-old has already enjoyed a well-established relationship with Madrid’s summer signing Jude Bellingham during their time at Borussia Dortmund. Furthermore, Haaland has a £86m release clause in his contract with Manchester City, making him an enticing target.
Mbappe’s desire is based on football ambition and building his legacy more than earning massive amounts of money. Furthermore, he has praised the Reds and their style of play and mentioned his mother’s love for Liverpool. These reasons continuously link him to a potential move to Anfield.

Liverpool does not have a reputation for exceeding their wage budget for any player, regardless of their abilities. An enormous wage for one player could potentially harm the Reds’ sense of togetherness and team spirit, qualities they highly value and thrive on.
If Mbappe truly desires a lasting legacy, Liverpool is the best place to come. However, to do that, he would need to make financial compromises which would earn him massive respect from the Kopites immediately.
