Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard issued an immediate explicit response to Manchester United legend Gary Neville over his “tapping up” claim

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard delivered an explicit response to Manchester United legend Gary Neville over the “tapping up” assertion. Neville revealed that United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson asked him to convince Gerrard to join United in 2004.

Many consider Gerrard one of the greatest midfielders, if not the very best, of his generation. The former Liverpool captain represented the Reds’ senior team for 17 seasons after earning promotion through the academy.

Throughout Gerrard’s playing career, he garnered interest from top clubs throughout Europe but remained loyal to Liverpool. He almost joined Chelsea before changing his mind, a saga that still sparks debates among the fanbase.

Steven Gerrard
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is also a childhood supporter of the club and stayed loyal throughout his playing career.

After 2003-04, Gerrard contemplated his future due to the poor progress from the club to challenge other top clubs. However, he opted to stay until former manager Brendan Rodgers took him as surplus to the requirement.

Rodgers’ treatment of Gerrard took every Kopite by surprise and alienated many in the fanbase with the poor explanation. To this date, we take it as one of his many mistakes that fortunately led us to Jurgen Klopp.

The Kopites sang songs in honour of Gerrard’s enormous stature and reputation, while bitter rival fans falsely renditioned tunes in response. Fans all over England still sing these songs, highlighting the significant impact he had on the English Premier League.

Speaking on The Overlap’s ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, Neville made big claims about the incident that took place. He said:

“Stevie told this in his book, where I went into his room with England and asked him to sign for Manchester United. I was meeting up with England for the Euros, and he [Ferguson] rang me and said it’s ambitious, but his words were, ‘Tell him I’ll go and fetch him, and I’ll walk him back down the East Lancs’. I went to see Stevie, and he quite categorically [rejected it] pretty quickly. He said he would never get out of Liverpool and his family would never get out of Liverpool.”

The former Reds’ skipper immediately took to the Instagram story (h/t talkSPORT) to publish his explicit yet funny response. He wrote:

“It was a polite f*** off.”

The hilarious retort received numerous chuckles and applause from the Kopites on social media. Gerrard is the greatest Liverpool player to ever play for the club for many fans and an idol. The 43-year-old exemplifies loyalty, tenacity, hard work, and humility, serving as an inspiration not only to young players but also to fans worldwide, regardless of their professions and lifestyles.
