Liverpool star Joe Gomez explains the reason behind his goal drought and the hilarious bet Jurgen Klopp made on him
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez explained his goal drought while his manager Jurgen Klopp has a funny bet about it. Gomez claimed that Klopp told him about a funny bet he had made with his wife over his first senior goal.
The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table and have successfully progressed in every competition. Despite the injury crisis in defence, Klopp has managed to use the youth academy players and the versatility of Gomez.
Gomez has played as a central defender, right back and left back for the Reds this season. He has consistently delivered top performances despite playing in different positions and has shown his adventurous side in attacking phases.
Gomez has made 201 appearances for the Reds in all competitions while assisting nine times, he is yet to score. He has shown more urgency to get his first goal, taking more shots particularly when Klopp deployed Gomez at left.
Gomez told We Are Liverpool Podcast (h/t YouTube) that the set piece instructions are one big reason for his drought. He said:
“I score in training! I get some in training. I don’t know, it’s weird because obviously eight years it’s never been that apparent, and now suddenly even the gaffer gave me a bit. He said he’d give my wife some money if I scored! I think the biggest thing is, like Pete [Krawietz], I’m never really up for corners. So obviously that plays a role, I’d have a little bit more of a chance, maybe, but I don’t know, it’s weird.”
The 26-year-old received criticism last season for his poor performances that coincided with the whole squad’s struggles. However, Gomez proved that form is temporary while class is permanent as he played a pivotal role this season.
Defending in any position he played, the Englishman has been formidable, appearing comfortable in silencing opponents. The media’s favorite winger Bukayo Saka of Arsenal faced two tormentable games against Gomez in the recent fixtures.
Gomez has been a surprising attacking outlet as a fullback, continuously producing darting runs to give an overlapping option. He has made 28 appearances this season in all competitions, providing three assists for the Reds.
