Liverpool could permanently lose out on their defender who is currently playing in the Bundesliga

Liverpool loanee, Sepp van der Berg who is currently on loan to Bundesliga side, FSV Mainz has seen a hard and unending struggle to get regular playing time at Anfield. Throughout his last five years with the club, the 22-year-old has been on three different loan spells.

However, Jurgen Klopp has not been impressed with any of his stints as Van der Berg’s playing time has not improved in the least. In the past five years, the 22-year-old has only made four first-team appearances for Liverpool.

But one also has to understand that there isn’t much that either side can do to help the situation. Klopp can’t bench Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate to give playing time to an unproven 22-year-old centre-back.

As reported by The Mirror, the Dutch defender is now open to the idea of a permanent departure from Anfield. However, his timing is a little awkward as Joel Matip’s contract is expiring at the end of the season with Virgil van Dijk’s expiring in 2025.

Right when there is a spot opening up on the team, van der Berg wants to leave. To be fair to him, even if both Matip and Van Dijk end up leaving the club it doesn’t guarantee that the 22-year-old will be getting regular playing time.

Liverpool will most likely snub him for a spot and explore the market for a new defender. Even Van Der Berg is aware of this and says that he will most likely leave the club during the summer if he doesn’t get the playing time that he wants.

It seems like Sepp van der Berg’s time with Liverpool depends on what kind of playing time he will be getting. If whoever succeeds Jurgen Klopp gives him the playing time he wants, then the Reds can celebrate their new defender, otherwise it’ll be an opportunity for the team to cash in and turn a profit.
