Danny Murphy expresses his belief that former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is not a suitable candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. Bayern sacked Tuchel as the club struggles to catch up to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
The German giants lost 1-0 to Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. They have also faced early elimination from DFB-Pokal after losing 2-1 to third tier German club FC Saarbrucken.
Bayern appointed Tuchel in March of 2023 to succeed Julian Nagelsmann after Chelsea sacked Tuchel earlier in the season. He won his first Bundesliga after his former club Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2 at home to Mainz 05.
Murphy stated on TalkSport that he doesn’t see Tuchel as a suitable choice for Liverpool due to his divisive nature. He said:
“No. He doesn’t fit them. He’s too divisive. He’s not a Liverpool manager. Not for me. It’s not a surprise to me. Let’s be honest, Bayern Munich should have lost the title to Borussia Dortmund last season – they ended up winning it on the final day. So things haven’t been great there for a while.”
During his managerial career, Tuchel has worked at FC Augsburg II, Mainz, Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern. Apart from Mainz and Die Schwarzgelben, he has enjoyed managing the clubs that provide massive transfer funding and already-developed players.
The profiles of the clubs where he managed success are opposite to Liverpool in culture and resources. Furthermore, the 50-year-old has a contentious relationship with the Reds fanbase that arose from his tenure at Chelsea.
Tuchel has faced criticism for having a reputation for falling out with the upper hierarchy of the clubs he managed. The German faced issues with PSG and his sacking from the Chelsea managerial role caused a lot of ruckuses.
Klopp has built a culture of developing young players and under his regime, the Reds used the transfer market shrewdly. The 56-year-old’s relationship with his players has been respectful and private, unlike Tuchel’s relationship with his players.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is currently the firm favourite to succeed Klopp at Liverpool. The Spaniard’s profile and his strong connection with the Kopites make rumours about Tuchel to Liverpool highly unlikely even as an alternative.
