Jurgen Klopp explained the squad depth at Liverpool even surprised him as the injury crisis continues to grow. Liverpool defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup final to achieve their first trophy of the season.
The Reds deployed several youngsters from the Academy for a huge chunk of the game to compensate for their losses. Klopp gave opportunities to Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns in the final against the stacked billion-dollar Chelsea side.
Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez failed to make it to the matchday squad and are still under observation. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajectic and Joel Matip are the long-term absentees.
This season, Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah established themselves into the senior squad when the Reds suffered with injuries. Klopp’s continued trust in academy players, even in high-pressure situations, proves worthwhile as they persistently deliver.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference (h/t Liverpoolfc.com), Klopp acknowledged that the squad depth surprised him as well. He said:
“Actually, our squad is deeper than we thought before the season, to be honest. We didn’t think we needed to figure out how deep it is, but the situation is like this. I said it plenty of times and rightly so, without the kids we wouldn’t be here where we are now. The rest is quite normal because of the amount of games we had in different competitions we played, everybody had game time.”
The Reds lost Ryan Gravenberch to a ligament injury due to a malicious tackle from Moises Caicedo in the final. Wataru Endo also left the Carabao Cup final on crutches and he is likely to miss the FA Cup game.
The congested fixture period has exacerbated Liverpool’s injury crisis as they relentlessly pursue every trophy this season. Liverpool played during the mid-week before the Carabao Cup final while Chelsea enjoyed a week’s rest.
Nevertheless, the squad has shown incredible cohesiveness and fluidity in every phase of the game despite numerous rotations of personnel. Klopp has developed a culture that nurtures a formidable mentality against any odds that the club faces.
