Liverpool owners held a face-to-face talk with Michael Edwards to persuade him to return amid the departure of Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool made a significant development in bringing back Michael Edwards as owners held a meeting to persuade him to return. Edwards served Liverpool for a decade from 2011 to 2021 and played a pivotal role in the club’s recent success.

He joined the Reds as a scout in 2011 and earned his way through internal promotion to become a sporting director. The Englishman has supervised the signing of top players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker.

He played a key role in negotiating high-value sales and purchases that kept the Reds competitive and financially healthy. Bargain signings like Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri combined with the impressive sale of Phillipe Coutinho helped Klopp build a formidable squad.

Liverpool won the Premier League and the Champions League under Edwards’ tenure and achieved further success from that squad. The Times reported that the Reds owner met Edwards last weekend and made significant progress during the meeting.

The report further stated that the role offered to the 44-year-old is unclear but it is supposedly above the sporting director. In January, Klopp announced that he was stepping back from the managerial role due to the feeling of burnout.

Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season and with him, there will be many significant changes. Edwards knows the club with all the business acumen to supervise a successful transition.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is currently the firm favourite to succeed Klopp as the new Liverpool manager. The Spaniard already has a healthy relationship with the Reds fanbase and incredible knowledge about the game.

He has done a remarkable job at Leverkusen as they continue being the only team in top European competition to be unbeaten. If Edwards decides to return, he would have the power to select the new sporting director.

Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes, who has a good rapport with Edwards, is one of the candidates for the role. Hughes has announced that he will leave his post in the summer after the end of the current season.
