Jurgen Klopp said that he plans to reunite with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as friends after leaving Liverpool. Under Klopp and Guardiola, Liverpool and Man City enjoyed a healthy rivalry for most of the last decade.
The duo have pushed each other as managers since their time in the Bundesliga, improving each other in the process. Klopp managed Borussia Dortmund and challenged the might of Bayern Munich under Guardiola in Germany before they shifted to England.
While the Spaniard enjoyed unlimited resources at Man City just like he did at Bayern, Klopp chose the harder path. Despite the limited resources compared to rivals, the Liverpool boss ensured the club remained competitive in both domestic and European tournaments.
In January, the 56-year-old announced that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the current season, shocking the fanbase. The German cited the feeling of burnout and lacking energy to justify his role as the head coach at Liverpool.
Speaking to the press after the 1-1 draw against Man City at Anfield (h/t Independent), Klopp shared the intimate knowledge. He said:
“We both respect each other a lot and that after our career we somehow become friends. He’s a golfer, I am not but he is Spanish and might play padel. We will play padel, we will speak and have great talks about sensational football games and incredible stuff.”
Liverpool outclassed the Citizens in the second half of the Premier League clash but only managed to share a point. The situation allowed Arsenal to stay at the top of the Premier League table with a higher goal difference.
Liverpool had a penalty decision not given at the end of the game when Jeremy Doku high-booted Alexis Mac Allister. The Reds are already facing an injury crisis while challenging the highly resourceful Premier League rivals.
This is the legacy that Klopp leaves behind as he has built a culture that balances ambition with opportunities for youngsters. Despite the feeling of unfairness throughout this season, the Liverpool fans are thoroughly proud of the manager and their players.
