Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk continues to dominate aerially, proving that he is a force to reckon with
Stat-based site Squawka stated that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has continued his dominance over the aerial duels. Jurgen Klopp appointed Van Dijk as the new Liverpool captain during the summer and he has led by example.
Van Dijk faced criticism last season as he struggled with form which coincided with the club’s struggle as a whole. Many critics claimed that he is past his best and lost his ability after the ACL injury in the 2020-21 season.
Nevertheless, the Dutch captain proved his naysayers wrong this season by playing a pivotal role in the club’s success. The Reds are currently second in the Premier League table, behind Arsenal in goal difference but equal in points tally.
Furthermore, they have successfully progressed in both the FA Cup and the Europa League competitions with the ambition to win them. Van Dijk scored the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final to beat Chelsea and secure the first trophy.
Stat-based site Squawka (h/t X) revealed that Van Dijk has won 25 consecutive aerial duels in the Premier League. The 32-year-old lost his last aerial duel in January as he continues to dominate the opposition.
Rival fans use Van Dijk as the cornerstone to compare their best centre-backs while attempting to make audacious claims. Arsenal fans are the prime example, doing their best to compare William Saliba with the Dutch captain.
Virgil van Dijk has now won 25 consecutive aerial duels in the Premier League.
