Liverpool have reached an agreement with Michael Edwards to play a crucial role in the new project alongside Richard Hughes

Michael Edwards will lead the restructuring project alongside Richard Hughes as the sporting director at Liverpool after reaching an agreement. FSG are already moving quickly after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced that he is stepping back from the managerial role.

Former sporting director Jorg Schmadtke left Liverpool at the end of the January transfer window, leaving another big vacancy. However, Klopp’s decision provided FSG with ample amount of time to create a thorough plan and implement it accordingly.

The method that FSG has applied to restructure Liverpool after Klopp’s era ends is akin to any new business entrepreneurship. Acquiring Edwards is the first step of the plan as he will supervise the restructuring of the club from the top.

The return of Michael Edwards to the senior role at Liverpool brings Richard Hughes closer to the sporting director role.

The former Liverpool sporting director earned an immense reputation during his past tenure, playing a key role in the recent success. His decade-long stint at the club helped them secure several bargain deals that reshaped the mediocre squad that Klopp inherited.

Edwards signed Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as a sporting director for Liverpool. The 44-year-old is a cult favourite among Liverpool fans, fully capable of building relationships between fans, staff and management. He will now replace Mike Gordon as the CEO and will resign from his current position with Ludonautics on June 1.

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t X) announced that FSG has reached an agreement with Edwards for the key role. He also announced in a separate post that Hughes has an agreement in place to join the Reds. The Bournemouth technical director announced his departure at the end of the season, ending his successful tenure.

Several top clubs highly covet Hughes, making him a massive addition to the upper management under Edwards. The former Bournemouth midfielder has a strong relationship with Inaki Ibanez who is Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso’s agent.

Hughes played a key role in hiring Ibanez’s other client, Andoni Iraola as the Bournemouth manager in the 2023 summer. He played a key role in signing Dominic Solanke, Callum Wilson, Arnaut Danjuma and Nathan Ake for the Cherries.

Liverpool’s swift movement and restructuring of upper management alongside firm interest in Xabi certainly has the fans excited. Edwards and Hughes can build a strong foundation for Klopp’s successor to thrive in a culture that Klopp infused. Beating Chelsea and Manchester United to the punch is an added bonus.
