Liverpool are ready to challenge five top European clubs to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz during the upcoming summer

Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz is a transfer target for the summer window for five top European giants including Liverpool. The 20-year-old has played a pivotal role for Leverkusen during their unbeaten run in all competitions so far this season.

Leverkusen are 10 points ahead of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and closing in on a historic title triumph this season. Their manager Xabi Alonso has built a formidable team that is adventurous on possession and well-organize defensively with consistent performances.

Standing at 1.77 metres Wirtz is a natural number 10, capable of playing on the wings as an inverted winger. The Germany international has fantastic dribbling ability and close control, making him hard to mark or duel with.

The 20-year-old has impressive game intelligence, always looking to exploit spaces between the opposition’s midfield and defence by making well-timed movements. He has impressive stamina and works hard for the team in the attacking third, suiting a counter-pressing and high-pressing philosophy.

Wirtz is a fantastic creator of critical chances, notching up numerous assists while using technique to score goals as well. The German has made 36 appearances for Leverkusen in all competitions, contributing with 11 goals and 17 assists this season.

Xabi deploys Wirtz as a number 10 on the left side in the 3-4-2-1 formation alongside another number 10. Wirtz changes his role according to the shift in style from left attacking wingback, Alex Grimaldo.

The 20-year-old plays as a conventional number 10 when Grimaldo stretches the play as an overlapping wingback. Additionally, he turns into an inverted winger when Grimaldo drops into the narrow spaces as an inverted wingback.

Journalist Ekem Konur (h/t Fichajes) reported that five top European clubs including Liverpool want to sign Wirtz during the summer. The other four giants are Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern and Liverpool’s Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

Wirtz perfectly fits the profile that the Reds desire in a player and has the fluidity that fits the squad. However, any potential transfer depends on the manager who would succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool with Xabi being the firm favourite.
