Alan Shearer reveals Liverpool linked Xabi Alonso is not short of top job offers
Liverpool are actively searching for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp and have been immediately linked with a move for Alonso, who has been enjoying a remarkable season at Bayer Leverkusen. However, Alan Shearer has warned them of the challenges they may face in this search.
Bayer Leverkusen has been performing exceptionally well this season, remaining undefeated in all competitions and currently holding a ten-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
Alonso appears to be the standout candidate for Liverpool, ahead of others such as Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim. However, Liverpool are not the only club keeping an eye on the Spaniard.
Bayern Munich last month confirmed Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season, ensuring they too require a new coach. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are also in the running for the Spaniard.
Weighing in on this dilemma and who would represent the right fit for Liverpool, Shearer told The Athletic:
“The really intriguing thing is Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are looking for a new manager ahead of next season and I don’t think they’re the only big jobs that will become available this summer.”
“With the job that Xabi Alonso is doing this season at Bayer Leverkusen, he’ll have a pick of jobs if he wants them. That’s the obvious link that loads of people have already made, given Alonso played for Liverpool.”
Shearer has given light to the fact that everybody has made strong speculations about Alonso’s interest in making the move to Anfield, as he is a former Liverpool player. It surely provides a bit of an advantage to the Reds but in the end, the Spaniard is open to moving to any club he feels like.
One challenge for Liverpool is that they are not the only major European club with a key vacancy to fill, meaning there is stiff competition and no straightforward path to securing their preferred choice.
But then, rather than stepping into a side that requires major surgery, Alonso would be overseeing a world-class first-team roster at Liverpool, complemented by a burgeoning youth academy and state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, his connection with the club’s fans would further solidify his position, making it theoretically a match made in heaven.
