Liverpool want to sign Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong despite having two specialist world-class right-backs
Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong is a transfer target for Liverpool despite the world-class right-backs in the Merseyside club’s disposal.
Frimpong is playing a pivotal role for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen this season as they continue their unbeaten run of form.
The Dutch international plays as an important attacking outlet in the fluid 3-4-2-1 formation that Xabi deploys at the club. Frimpong is the primary right wing-back in the formation but he has a fluid responsibility in the attacking phases.
The 23-year-old can drop in the inverted role while the right attacking midfield takes his duty of stretching the play. At the same time, Frimpong can also opt to stretch the opposition and run down the byline to create attacks.
The Dutchman has a low centre of gravy, incredible pace and dribbling ability that makes him unpredictable for the opponents. He has a good core strength to shield the ball from any challenges or duels, holding possession in tight spaces.
Frimpong has made 36 appearances for Leverkusen this season, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists so far this season. Fichajes reported that Liverpool are willing to sign Frimpong during the summer despite having two specialist right-back options.
The 23-year-old has a release clause of 40 million Euros, and Manchester United and Chelsea are also showing interest in him. Frimpong’s release clause is a bargain price considering the inflated price that players of his quality dictate.
Liverpool have vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley as the two right-back choices with the attacking qualities parallel with Frimpong. However, Trent has played more in the inverted role and as a number six in central midfield this season. The recurring use of Trent in the central midfield points toward his slow transition into a regular midfield.

Frimpong would be an impressive addition to the Reds squad and if the rumours surrounding the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Jurgen Klopp’s successor is true then the Dutchman thoroughly fits the profile he would desire. Amorim also deploys a 3-4-3 formation in which the right wingback position plays a crucial role.
