Turkish outlet claims that the agent of Liverpool defender Joel Matip has offered the services of the player to Fenerbahce
According to reports from a Turkish outlet, the agent of Liverpool defender Joel Matip has offered him to Fenerbahce. The 32-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament tear injury in the December game against Fulham, sidelining him.
Liverpool signed Matip as a free agent in a four-year deal in 2016 after his contract with Schalke 04 expired. The former Cameroon international played a pivotal role under Jurgen Klopp, achieving numerous trophies with the club.
Matip formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk which helped Liverpool win the Champions League and the Premier League. Despite the recurring issues with injuries, Matip remained a pivotal part of the senior team during his tenure.
The 32-year-old has built a strong relationship with the Reds staff and many players during his time at the club. Van Dijk and Klopp have advocated for Matip to secure a new contract despite his age and injury record.
The Cameroonian’s contract runs out on June 30, 2024, after the current season ends and his return is still uncertain. The 32-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season before his season-ending injury happened.
Turkish outlet Sabah has reported that Matip’s agent has offered the services of the player to Fenerbahce. Matip has the freedom to sign a pre-contract agreement with any team before his contract with the Reds expires.
The Cameroonian has made 201 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, contributing with 11 goals and six assists. Matip earned praise for both his defensive abilities and his immense skills on the ball as a modern-day defender.
His dazzling ball progressive runs are the highlight of his career with the Reds that every fan would fondly remember. The 32-year-old is a cult favourite among the Kopites and well-respected around the city of Liverpool.
