Liverpool could potentially sign a highly-coveted goal-scorer in Viktor Gyokeres
The potential appointment of Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim could open the door for Liverpool to sign forward Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres has played a pivotal role for Sporting CP, showcasing his prolific capabilities in the attack with goals and assists.
The Portuguese club are currently at the top of the Liga Portugal, four points ahead of second-place Benfica. They have also defeated their Portuguese rivals in the Taca de Portugal semi-finals to reach the finals of this season.
Standing at 1.87 metres, Gyokeres is a dominant presence in the frontline who can challenge any defender in one-on-one duels. He has the athleticism and strength to lead the line and bring other players into the game with a link-up.
The 25-year-old is a clinical finisher and he has shown his prolific consistency under Amorim this season. The Sweden international is capable of shooting with precision with both of his feet and with the header, maintaining composure.
Gyokeres goes beyond being just a clinical finisher; he actively contributes to the overall attacking buildup in each phase. The 25-year-old drops deep in channels and around the spaces between the opponent’s defence and midfield to make an impact.
He uses good decision-making and creativity to make goal-scoring moves for his teammates, using strong link-up plays as well. The Swedish forward also contributes a lot when his team loses possession, working hard to press the opponents.
According to HITC (h/t BBC), Liverpool wants to sign Gyokeres during the summer to bolster their attack. Gyokeres’ agent Hasan Cetinkaya told Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t Mirror) that he joined Sporting CP to play under Amorim. He said:
“Yes, it will be more difficult for Viktor to stay if Ruben Amorim leaves Sporting. Because Viktor came precisely because of Ruben. The day we met, I said to Ruben: ‘Here’s my boy, he came to Sporting because of you’. Of course, it’s an honour for any player to be able to play in the Champions League. Viktor is no exception in that respect, but there are other important things and Ruben Amorim is one of them. If he leaves, it will be more difficult for Viktor to continue.”
Liverpool have suffered greatly in recent weeks due to poor composure and complacency in their overall game. Their attack department has squandered numerous goal-scoring opportunities that have cost them many points during the title chase.

Gyokeres is a perfect player for the Reds, fitting in every aspect that Liverpool desires in a forward. The 25-year-old would cost a lot but given their necessity to sort out the attack, the Reds should be willing to spend big. After all, Gyokeres has scored 36 goals and provided 16 assists in all competitions this season from 43 appearances for Sporting CP.
