Manchester United legend Gary Neville continues to let his bias do the talking, claiming Liverpool were “hanging on” to the title race

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville claims that Liverpool hung on to the title race for too long as they struggled. Liverpool suffered a draw and a loss in their last two Premier League games which cost them dearly.

The Reds are currently third in the Premier League table, one point behind league-leaders Manchester City and alongside Arsenal. They are behind Arsenal only in goal difference as six games remain for the season to wrap up.

Liverpool have also crashed out of the Europa League in the quarter-finals, losing to Atalanta as their poor form continues. However, Neville’s claim negates many external factors that played a key role during this season.

Neville told Sky Sports that Liverpool had hung on to the title race, negating every unreasonable obstacle they faced. He said:

“This is a monumental achievement I think for Jurgen Klopp, for them to be where they are. I said it before the international break and a few Liverpool fans had a go at me, but I felt like they were hanging on. I just felt like they were hanging on for dear life with emotion, with it being Klopp’s last season.”

While the pressure of Man City’s dominant team looms throughout the season, Liverpool’s chance of building the gap faced uncontrollable obstacles. We are not even talking about the severe injury crisis that Jurgen Klopp navigated through, during this season.

Liverpool lost critical points in important games which involved remarkably blatant decisions from the referees and officials that Nevile defended. Despite knowing the gravity of the situation and in many cases, accepting that the decision was wrong, the media defended PGMOL.

Liverpool dropped two points each in the home game against Arsenal and Manchester United and an away game against Chelsea. Referees have made blatant handball decisions in each of these games, consistent with decisions made on other occasions during this season

The Reds also suffered their first loss against Tottenham Hotspur in the away game that involved multiple game-changing decisions. PGMOL apologized after the game but Liverpool faced the consequences with another three dropped points. Furthermore, Liverpool dropped two points against league leaders at Anfield despite the late-minute foul on Alexis Mac Allister from Jeremy Doku.

Neville and his fellow pundits never put Liverpool as the title challengers so it must be hard for them to swallow their pride and accept their predictions had unprofessional bias. Liverpool remains competitive in the title race against high-spending and dominant Manchester City and Arsenal, a feat these pundits wish teams like Manchester United and Chelsea could achieve.
