Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold talks about free-kick routine against Fulham
Only moments before Trent Alexander-Arnold scored with one of his trademark free-kicks in the 3-1 win against Fulham, the Reds had a chance to amass a lead. Closer to the edge of the box, Harvey Elliott and Trent stood behind the dead ball, with Harvey failing to clear the wall with his attempt.
Thankfully for the Reds, Trent’s eventual goal came only four minutes after Elliott’s effort. Speaking of that passage, the Reds’ vice-captain shared that Liverpool studied Fulham’s defensive behaviours in moments like that and expected the wall to jump. Much to the Reds’ initial annoyance, and in favour of the fans, the wall did not jump as high as Elliott‘s effort to send it below the barricade of players surely must have felt like an egg on his face. Here is what Trent had to say about the same in conversation with the club’s official website:
“At that point, there was no question that the second one was going to be mine! But we did our analysis yesterday and we saw that the wall likes to jump. It just didn’t jump as much as we planned that it would. Harvey had the right idea, he just couldn’t execute it. Mine was a little bit further out and I was able to execute what I wanted to do.”
The second scenario, a bit further away from goal. Proper TAA territory and he made it seem like that. Proper curler that Bernd Leno in goal could do absolutely zilch about. All said and done, both players were certainly excellent in the win against the Cottagers.
Keep the momentum going!
Almost poetry that Trent, in his first start in a while, comes and shows that he’s back and in style. Beyond Trent’s goal, both he and Elliott were instrumental throughout the match. Elliott, after his free-kick attempt, went on to showcase his playmaking abilities by assisting Ryan Gravenberch’s first-ever Premier League goal. His contribution highlighted the young midfielder’s growing confidence and maturity on the pitch.
Here is an intriguing stat. Since the start of February, only Kevin De Bruyne (8) has had more assists for Premier League clubs in all competitions than Harvey Elliott (7). It was so good to see a refreshed Liverpool squad dominate most parts of a football game and secure all possible points.
Diogo Jota, with his strike against Marco Silva’s side, completed 100 goals in English football over his time with the Reds and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The squad rotation surely helped Liverpool, and if it acts as a wake-up call for our misfiring attackers on the bench, NOTHING LIKE IT.
