Liverpool honcho Michael Edwards ready to splash £190m in summer triple swoop

Liverpool chief Michael Edwards is keeping tabs on three major transfer targets this summer

According to HITC (h/t The Express), Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s chief, sent scouts to Portugal on Sunday to assess three potential summer transfer targets closely. Liverpool may open their coffers this summer to compensate for Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure.

The club’s football CEO is already strategizing for recruitment post-Klopp’s tenure. Ruben Amorim, the current Sporting Lisbon manager, seems to be a frontrunner to succeed Klopp at Anfield. His team secured a 3-0 victory over Vitoria de Guimaraes on Sunday, with striker Viktor Gyokeres netting twice and Pedro Goncalves adding a goal.

Liverpool scouts attended the match, with Viktor Gyokeres as their primary target. Promising defender Goncalo Inacio and imposing central midfielder Morten Hjulmand are also potentially on the Reds’ radar.

Gyokeres has enjoyed immense success since joining Sporting from Coventry City last summer, tallying 24 goals in 29 league appearances. The 25-year-old striker could be available for £69 million at the end of the season, sources suggest.

Sporting has reportedly placed the same hefty price tag on Danish international Hjulmand. Meanwhile, Inacio’s contract includes a £52 million release clause. Acquiring all three players could cost Liverpool a total of £190 million.

All three stars played the full 90 minutes as Sporting continued their push towards their first Portuguese league title since 2021, with Benfica trailing by 10 points.

The scouting expedition serves as an early indication that Liverpool is proactively preparing for the summer transfer market. It’s an opportunity for the new football manager Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes to showcase their value to fans.

If Ruben Amorim joins Liverpool, though, it wouldn’t be surprising to see his Sporting stars follow him to an exit from the club. However, with him likely to move to West Ham United it remains to be seen how we proceed.
