Liverpool continue talks for Arne Slot despite initial rejection

Even though Feyenoord rejected Liverpool FC’s initial bid for Arne Slot, there seems to be a sense of direction and movement in negotiations which might end up in Liverpool’s favour.

The Reds initially put in a £7.7m bid for Slot, which stood swiftly rejected as per The Athletic [subscription required]. Even though that happened, talks between the parties are progressing. According to Sky Sports, Feyenoord and Liverpool are reaching a conclusion which will see the Dutch club allow their manager to leave for a compensation fee of £10m.

Slot is very keen on the idea of joining Liverpool. If that is the case, he might have watched the Derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison. He would surely have to know that he has a lot of work on his hands in case he moves to Merseyside. A keen admirer of Pep Guardiola, he could give the Reds a new direction.

Liverpool managerial target Arne Slot rejected a move to Tottenham last summer.

Can he Slot in?

Slot led Feyenoord to their second Eredivisie title in 20 years last season and currently has the team sitting in second place in the table. Given that he was Tottenham’s first choice, judging by their subsequent appointment of Ange Postecoglou, we can assume that Slot is rather a polished version of the Spurs coach.

Liverpool began their search for a new head coach in November, with Michael Edwards, Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football, and the new sporting director Richard Hughes now spearheading the process.

Slot’s attacking approach and history of nurturing young talent align well with Liverpool’s future aspirations. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds. Especially with the shambolic way the Reds are ending their season. If we thought last season was a hard transition, we can hit ourselves in the face with any thick book. The real transition is yet to dawn upon us. Let’s brace ourselves. The club has to make some uncomfortable decisions and we as fans have to accept that come what may.

Having said that, this was about the managerial transition. We have let Jurgen Klopp down in his final season as the Reds’ boss and that is something nobody can change unfortunately.

Now that the league title is more or less out of our hands, it is best if the players put in one final push to ensure the best possible finish from this point on.
