Virgil van Dijk makes ‘look in the mirror’ claim and questions the team’s desire to win the Premier League

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admits that they don’t deserve to be in the title race after another self-sabotage performance

Virgil van Dijk acknowledged that Liverpool doesn’t deserve to be in the title race after another horrible performance against Everton. The Toffees beat the Reds 2-0 at Goodison Park in the Premier League clash to crush their title hopes.

Liverpool’s defence allowed two goals from set-piece situations, and opponents physically outmatched them in both ground and aerial duels. The team lacked conviction, composure and ideas in both the defensive and the offensive phases of the game.

Liverpool have self-sabotaged all the hard work they put in throughout this season since the middle of March. Despite dominating Manchester United in both the FA Cup tie and the Premier League clash, they lost and drew respectively.

Furthermore, the Reds lost the Europa League quarter-final tie against Atalanta and lost the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace. The complacency all over the pitch and incredibly poor performances from their important first-team players cost them three titles.

Speaking to Sky Sports (Fabrizio Romano’s X account), Van Dijk admitted that Liverpool does not deserve to win the title. He said:

“If we play like this, we’ve no chance to consider ourselves in the title race. Everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their own performances if they really give everything and ask if they wanna win the league?!”

The Liverpool captain needs to look in the mirror himself as he has failed to organise the defence. The Dutchman proved his critics from the last season wrong during the early stages of the season.

However, his current performances showed that his age is starting to catch up as he turns 33 in July. Van Dijk’s centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate deserves an equal amount of criticism if not more as Liverpool continued to concede early.
