Romano reveals Arne Slot wants to retain dominant Liverpool defensive star

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that upcoming Liverpool coach Arne Slot is set to hold talks with Virgil Van Dijk soon, with the priority of keeping the Dutch international in the team. Since joining Liverpool in 2018, Van Dijk has amassed nine trophies, cementing his status as a key figure at Anfield.

With 267 appearances for the club, Van Dijk has been instrumental in Liverpool’s successes across multiple campaigns, notably playing a pivotal role in securing the Premier League title in the 2019–20 season. His leadership qualities and defensive prowess have been invaluable to the team.

As Liverpool navigates a period of significant change, with Jurgen Klopp set to depart this summer, the arrival of Arne Slot as head coach marks a new chapter for the club. Slot’s priority will be addressing contract negotiations, with Van Dijk among the key players whose deals are approaching expiration.

Slot wants Van Dijk to remain at the club

In his recent column for Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano wrote:

“There have been reports in Germany in the last few days about Virgil van Dijk possibly going to Borussia Dortmund, but from what I’m hearing from sources this is not true.”

“My understanding is that Dortmund are focusing on different names – they will try to keep Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen, but Van Dijk links are not something real or concrete at this point. Contacts are not taking place, it’s not happening.”

“Incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot will have a direct conversation with Van Dijk, and he will try to keep the experienced Dutch defender at the club as a part of his project. Slot would love to keep Van Dijk at the club, so the conversation between them is going to be important.”

Amid recent speculations linking Virgil Van Dijk with a potential move to Borussia Dortmund, Fabrizio Romano has clarified that these links are not yet concrete. Arne Slot, the incoming Liverpool coach, is determined to keep the captain at Anfield and will personally hold talks with the Dutch player to persuade him to stay.

Recognizing Van Dijk’s importance as a powerful leader both on and off the pitch, Slot understands that Liverpool cannot afford to lose such a key figure. The upcoming discussions between Slot and the centre-back will be crucial in determining the defender’s future at the club amidst ongoing transfer rumours.

A great leader for Liverpool

Despite approaching 33 years old next July, Van Dijk has remained one of Liverpool’s most dependable players throughout this season, demonstrating his ability to perform at the highest level for several more years. His age has not hindered his performance, showcasing his enduring quality and leadership on the pitch.

Liverpool supporters may understandably feel apprehensive about the prospect of losing their influential Dutch star, who has been a pivotal figure at the club for the past six years. However, as Arne Slot prepares to take the helm at Anfield, it is imperative that he initiates discussions with Van Dijk to establish mutual trust and align on the standards they aim to uphold both in the dressing room and on the field. These conversations will be crucial in securing Van Dijk’s commitment to the club’s future success.
