As reported by The Mirror, Liverpool will be losing out on a favourite of Jurgen Klopp as John Achterberg will step down at the end of this season. Achterberg served as the Reds’ Goalkeeping coach and has been at Anfield for almost 15 years now.
However, he will be part of the staff who will be leaving the grounds of Anfield when Klopp departs at the end of the current season. The 52-year-old is expected to reunite with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the Saudi Arabian Pro League.
Having been a goalkeeper himself and being around a top-flight club comes with its own wealth of experience and Achterberg will be putting it all to use as he ventures out to the Middle East to help Gerrard and his Al-Ettifaq side.
Achterberg might not be known to all but he has been crucial for Liverpool for over a decade now. He even helped the Reds identify Alisson Becker as a solid option back when the Reds doled out £67m for the Brazilian goalkeeper.
The 52-year-old will become another piece of the puzzle that new coach Arne Slot must solve. A solid goalkeeping coach will go a long way towards helping the team sustain their success and the gap left behind by Achterberg will be difficult to fill.
During his announcement to step down the goalkeeping coach mentioned that he feels the time is right to find a new challenge for himself. It’ll be interesting to see how Liverpool meets the challenge of replacing Achterberg this summer.
Steven Gerrard has found a gem for his coaching staff, hopefully, his Al-Ettifaq team will be better for it.
