Liverpool loanees Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips endure successful temporary spells away from Anfield
These are two players who have been as professional as they could get. Nat Phillips, cult hero at Anfield and then some, in search of consistent game time, switched to Celtic on loan in the summer. However, things did not go smoothly in Scotland. Liverpool recalled him to send him to Wales, to ball out for Cardiff City, and that has been top-notch for The Bluebirds. Morton, on the other hand, has been tremendous in the middle of the park for Hull City.
Let’s talk Morton. The lad’s been on fire down at Hull City, strutting his stuff and showing the Championship what he’s made of. With 41 appearances under his belt, he’s proven himself to be one of the hottest young midfield talents around. And get this – he even got a nod from the England U21 squad. Talk about making waves! Here is what he told the club’s official website about his experience on loan:
“It takes time to get used to it, coming from academy football straight to the Championship,”
“It’s like a whole different sport in my opinion.
“You’re playing against players who will smash you off the ball, you don’t get that in academy football! But it’s developed my game massively and puts you in a good stead for what you want in the future.”
Then there’s Nathaniel Phillips, a seasoned pro compared to young Morton. He’s been around the block, with loan spells at VfB Stuttgart and AFC Bournemouth before landing at Cardiff City. But this season, he’s really come into his own, becoming a rock at the back for the Bluebirds. Almost every minute of every game? Now that’s dedication. We know a bit about his dedication. That 2020/21 season still lives fresh in memory.
Both these lads have been through the loan grinder before. Phillips had his stints abroad and in the Championship, while Morton cut his teeth at Blackburn Rovers last season. And you know what they say – experience is the best teacher. It’s like they’ve been honing their craft, preparing for the big leagues. Here is what Big Nat had to say:
“It’s nice to be back playing games, playing regularly,”
“Off the back of that, it was really important that wherever I went I was playing regularly and doing my bit. Fortunately, I have had the chance to do that at Cardiff. I’ve played almost every minute of every game.”
“Looking to the summer, sometimes you can worry and overthink things too much. You can only control what you can control. The plan is to go back in pre-season and just take it from there.”
You know what they say – experience is the best teacher. It’s absolutely brilliant to see our players go out on loan and get the minutes they deserve. Phillips sums it up nicely. Playing regular football, and feeling the crowd’s buzz – it’s what dreams are made of. But he knows, nothing comes close to Anfield, no?
But here’s where it gets juicy. With Jurgen Klopp departing at the end of the season, there’s a new Head Coach in town – Arne Slot. And you bet your house both Morton and Phillips will be looking to impress him come pre-season.

And let’s not overlook the impact they could have on the club’s finances. Phillips, with his solid performances and experience, could fetch a pretty penny on the transfer market if the Reds decide to cash in. And as for Morton, well, the sky’s the limit. With his potential, he could become a cornerstone of the Liverpool midfield for years to come.
