Revealed: Reason for Liverpool ace’s absence against Aston Villa

Joe Gomez replaced Andy Robertson for Liverpool against Aston Villa because of a niggle

Andy Robertson seeing himself replaced in the starting XI by Joe Gomez was the only change in the backline for Liverpool in the game against Aston Villa. The 30-year-old Scotland international missed out because of a minor niggle, and in his absence, Joe Gomez put up a stellar shift.

Gomez saw himself back in the team after sitting on the bench for five games straight. He made substitute appearances in matches against Atalanta, Fulham, Everton, West Ham, and Tottenham. Robbo had been in the starting lineup for all those games and had scored in the last two matches, against West Ham and Spurs, making it a two-game scoring streak for him.

Nevertheless, it is Lewis Steele of MailSport, who reports via Twitter that Robbo missed out on this game due to a small niggle. He further assured that this comes as a precautionary decision with the Euros on the horizon. We can expect him to take part against Wolves on Sunday, the final game of the Jurgen Klopp era.

Not an injury scare, breathe!

We all need players like Joey G. Even though he can start every week, he has to remain content with the fact that he doesn’t. However, when he plays, whether that’s right-back, centre-back, or in this instance, left-back, he puts in 120%. The 26-year-old played a key role in Cody Gakpo taking the lead for the second time in the game.

Spare a thought for Kostas Tsimikas though, who last featured in the 2-0 loss to Everton back in the third week of April. KT is a top-class left-back in his own right, who offers a tad bit more than Joey in attacking transitions but we know, our #2 is a much more solid defender.

Coming back to Gomez, hopefully, he can make an appearance against Wolves on Sunday. The final game under Jurgen Klopp and how nice it would be to see his oldest serving player score his first-ever goal for Liverpool before the club bids adieu to a manager who has contributed so much.

It was a nervy encounter at Villa Park with Gomez doing well though. Not that he has done anything wrong, but be right to believe that Robbo shall replace him in the XI the moment the Scotsman is fit and ready to go. No doubt about it.
