Highly rated manager was on the verge of living his dream of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Right after Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, the club was suddenly being linked with almost every manager in the world. The German manager was ending an almost decade-long stint and the question of his successor was a big one.
Before Arne Slot became the next man up, it was Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim who was constantly looking like the favorite to take over. Christian Falk revealed on The Daily Briefing that everything had been negotiated before the deal fell apart.
He says Amorim came very close and that all contracts were ready to be signed. However, a sneaky €10m demand cost Amorim his dream of succeeding Klopp at Liverpool. Here’s what Falk had to say about it. (h/t The Daily Briefing)
“Everything had already been negotiated and the contracts were ready to be signed.” “Sporting Lisbon would have received a transfer fee of €10m, as had been agreed. However, the president of Sporting Lisbon, Francisco Varandas, is said to have changed his mind at the last minute.”
“Suddenly, the president demanded €20m and spontaneously doubled the price.”
Falk added that Liverpool were not willing to play the negotiation game with Sporting CP. The whole ordeal was bitter for Ruben Amorim and his president’s greed lost him his dream job. However, he is staying steady at Sporting CP.
The Portuguese manager has impressed a lot of top-flight clubs. A move to the Premier League seems all but inevitable for Amorim in the future. Unfortunately for him, it won’t be for Liverpool, at least, not for the time being anyway.
Slot will arrive from Feyenoord this summer and a new era will begin at Anfield. He has some big shoes to fill and will surely be fighting an uphill battle during his first few days with the Reds.
