Liverpool and Manchester United in Transfer Tug-of-War for English star better than Kobbie Mainoo

Liverpool and Manchester United to battle for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is a transfer target for both Liverpool and Manchester United as the summer window approaches. Wharton has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Premier League and established himself as a senior team regular at Palace.

Standing at 1.82 metres, the youngster is already well-built in physique, strength and athleticism to thrive at the senior level. He uses his body to his advantage, shielding the ball well and maintaining possession in tight spaces during the game.

The 20-year-old also fully utilizes his physique in making tackles and challenges which is an immense part of his game. Wharton can play as a defensive midfielder and also as a central midfielder according to the tactical requirements.

The England U21 usually plays in a deeper role as a number six, shielding the spaces between the midfield and the defence. Despite his young age, Wharton uses game intelligence and maturity to commit to tackles and interceptions, making good decisions.

The 20-year-old has played an important role for Palace in fulfilling his defensive duties while also contributing in possession. Wharton has the close control, technique and understanding of the game to distribute accurate passes and participate in possessional play.

He uses the ball smartly but also makes progressive passes to unleash the attacking teammates on the opponents. The 20-year-old has made 44 appearances in all competitions for Palace, contributing with two goals and six assists this season.

Despite playing in a deeper role, Wharton’s direct assist contributions at such a young age is a very promising sign. According to TBR Football (h/t Fichajes), Liverpool are ready to battle Man United to sign Wharton from the Eagles.

The Reds have Wataru Endo as the only natural defensive midfielder while Alexis Mac Allister has played regularly there too. Liverpool needs a strong defensive midfielder even if Stefen Bajcetic stays fit to play more next season.

Manchester United sensation Kobbie Mainoo is enjoying a decent breakout season and was also nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Year Award. Wharton, on the other hand, appears to have a higher ceiling and should prove to be a smart investment in the long term.

Wharton fits the profile that the Reds desire in a defensive midfielder and his young age is another attractive factor. Incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot prefers to play a double pivot and develop young talents which could be another important factor in their pursuit for the Crystal Palace midfielder.
