Glen Johnson backs Liverpool to make a move for Gabriel Jesus
Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson reckons that Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus could be a savvy signing for Liverpool this summer. Jesus has had a bit of a tough season with injuries, keeping him from showcasing his best form for the Gunners. But Johnson believes that Liverpool could definitely benefit from bringing the Brazilian into their squad.
There’s been chatter that Arsenal might be open to selling Jesus, which could set up an interesting transfer scenario. Johnson, chatting to Betfred via ECHO, expressed his surprise at the idea, suggesting it would be a no-brainer for Liverpool or even Chelsea to snap him up if he’s available.
“I would be surprised if Arsenal does actually want to sell him because I think that would be crazy. If he does become available, either Chelsea or Liverpool should bite Arsenal’s arm off,”
“He’s not going to get you 25 goals a season, but he’s going to be a big part of the team and he works his socks off. In front of goal, he’s going to score a lot of goals at a club like that where he’ll get a lot of opportunities. Chelsea and Liverpool should absolutely jump at the chance.”
Since Roberto Firmino left for Saudi club Al Ahli last summer, Liverpool have been missing a player of his ilk. They brought in Darwin Nunez, who did spend a season with Bobby, but Nunez’s form has been a bit shaky. Nunez is more of a traditional striker who loves running in behind the defence. Jesus, however, is more like Firmino, great at linking up play, dropping deep to create space for others, and acting as a bridge between the midfield and the frontline.
Jesus, Mohamed and Alexander linking up at Anfield?
Diogo Jota has had a go at that role, but he’s more of a complete striker rather than a false nine. Jesus, with his ability to create chances and his work rate, seems like he could surely “Arne Slot” right into the role Firmino used to play, providing that crucial link-up play Liverpool have not had in the absence of Bobby.
The idea of adding Jesus to the squad could be very appealing for Liverpool. His Premier League experience, versatility, and knack for being a team player who contributes beyond just scoring could be exactly what Liverpool need to boost their attacking options.
And with the creative talents of players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson whipping in crosses, plus the likes of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz inverting, the 27-year-old Brazilian international could create and find for himself loads of spaces. He has 303 appearances collectively for Man City and Arsenal, scoring 114 goals and 60 assists, most of which have come during his time under Pep Guardiola.

So, while it’s all still up in the air, the thought of Gabriel Jesus in a Liverpool shirt is a tantalising one. He could very well be the smart signing Glen Johnson believes he would be, fitting in seamlessly and perhaps bringing a bit of that Firmino magic back to Anfield. It’s definitely one to keep an eye on as the summer transfer window approaches.
