Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk confirms no improvement in his contractual situation yet
Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk confirms that there is no update regarding his contractual situation yet. If a contractual update does not happen this summer, the Dutchman will be entering the last year of his contract, which expires in 2025.
The same applies to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, three players who have been crucial to Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp and over whose futures the club must make important decisions soon.
With Klopp stepping down and Slot taking over, Anfield is about to undergo significant changes this summer. It is unclear if the current captain, Van Dijk, will stay with the team for the long run under the new manager. But some concrete talks regarding the future of the Dutch star must happen soon.
After Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Wolves in the Premier League season finale, Van Dijk talked about his future in the club saying:
“My future is not important at the moment. Nothing has changed and nothing is on the table either. No changes in my situation at all.”
“There is so much room for improvement, so much room to develop. I am looking forward to next season already. Change is sometimes a little bit scary as you are in the unknown but the only thing you can do is trust the club.”
“I’ll be here for him, whatever he needs. It is all about sticking together and giving him the chance to show what he is capable of with the other guys who will come in.”
Despite his future being uncertain, after witnessing Klopp leave Anfield on Sunday, Van Dijk acknowledges that it will be difficult if he does leave the club at some point. Moreover, he seems positive regarding his personal interest in staying in Liverpool.
The Liverpool captain seems positive about respectfully accepting the new manager’s arrival and giving him the chance to prove himself to the club. He gives out full support to Slot, as he insists that he is there to help him out through the adapting process after his arrival at Anfield.
